Welcome to HRECOS

Tivoli NorthThe Hudson River Environmental Conditions Observing System (HRECOS) is a network of real-time monitoring stations on the Hudson River Estuary. The stations are geographically distributed from Schodack Island to the New York/New Jersey harbor and are monitoring hydrologic and meteorologic parameters ever quarter hour. HRECOS is operated by a consortium of many partners from government and the research community.

Tide Tables Are Inaccurate Predictors of Water Level

Kris McShane coordinates American Shad and Striped Bass sampling for the Hudson River Estuary Program. This is hard work. A crew of ten men and women manually haul in a five hundred foot seine net that may hold hundreds of large fish.

Kris and his crew depend on the NOAA tide tables to set their sampling schedule. They can't sample when the water is low because the mud would fill their net and make it very difficult to haul in. Unfortunately, the water level predictions presented in the tide tables are frequently inaccurate and Kris' crew wastes time waiting for the tide.
